Papier mache Paste recipe

Ever find yourself without any household glue?  You’re never out of glue if you have flour, water, and a little sugar.  The key to making papier-mâché paste is to cook it well — but be careful not to burn it, as then there will be brown and black flakes all through your paste.  To keep leftover paste for another use, store it in the freezer, as it will spoil quickly otherwise. Thaw it out at room temperature, or defrost it SLOWLY in the microwave, taking it out to stir it several times while it defrosts.

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup cold water

1 cup flour (all-purpose flour works fine)

2 to 3 cups boiling water

1 1/2 tsp. sugar

Small saucepan (or other small cooking pot)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1:  In the saucepan, mix together the cold water and the flour, using a wire whisk or a fork, until it is smooth.  (If your saucepan is coated with a non-stick surface, be careful not to scratch it!)

Step 2:  Slowly add the boiling water, stirring to mix thoroughly.

Step 3:  Place the pan on the stove over medium-high heat, stirring, until it boils.  Cook and stir for about five minutes total, turning down the heat if it looks like it may burn, and adding more boiling water if it becomes very thick.

Step 4:  Remove from heat, add the sugar, and stir well.  If it’s too thick, add more boiling water, stirring it in thoroughly, until it’s the consistency you desire.

Step 5:  Allow the paste to cool thoroughly.  (If it’s not cool enough to use after 10 minutes, you can put it in the freezer for a while to help cool it off.)  Stir again, and it’s ready to use.  FINI!
